The search for extraterrestrial intelligence - podcast
The most intensive ever search for alien lifeThis week it was revealed that astronomers are about to start the most intensive ever search for alien life. The Breakthrough Listen project will scan stars in 100 galaxies for radio and optical signatures that indicate someone, or something, is out there.Until now, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence - or SETI - has been met with an eerie silence. What makes scientists so convinced it's worthwhile looking for alien life? Continue reading...

Bronchogenic cyst presenting as content of omphalocele - A case report.
Abstract Bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a very rare congenital anomaly occurring due to budding of the primitive foregut, and its common location is the posterior mediastinum. BC when diagnosed prenatally can be treated if it is encroaching on the development of lungs. BC has been reported in other locations such as cervical, thoracic, abdominal sites and also as subcutaneous lesions. Omphalocele is a congenital malformation occurring due to a central defect in the abdominal wall with herniation of the viscera. The nonentity documented here was found in a female fetus with 20 weeks of gestational age. The mother was a ...

Non-operative management of a rare diagnosis of splenic torsion in a child with a history of giant omphalocele: A case report and literature review.
CONCLUSION: Although rare, splenic torsion should be considered in a child with a history of omphalocele presenting with abdominal pain. Non-operative management of an infarcted spleen can be a safe treatment option to avoid surgery in complex patients. PMID: 24602190 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Wandering spleen associated with omphalocele in a neonate: An unusual case with non-operative management
Publication date: Available online 16 June 2017 Source:Journal of Pediatric Surgery Case Reports Author(s): Daisuke Masui, Suguru Fukahori, Kimio Asagiri, Shinji Ishii, Nobuyuki Saikusa, Naoki Hashizume, Motomu Yoshida, Naruki Higasidate, Saki Sakamoto, Shiori Tsuruhisa, Yoshiaki Tanaka, Minoru Yagi Wandering spleen with a history of omphalocele is extremely rare. We encountered a male baby with wandering spleen associated with omphalocele. This case of wandering spleen in a neonate was diagnosed by ultrasound and computed tomography scans after surgery for omphalocele. Our case was able to be managed non-operatively due ...

Familial occurrence of gastroschisis: a population-based overview on recurrence risk, sex-dependent influence, and geographical distribution
ConclusionOur findings support a greater liability attributable to familial factors on gastroschisis along with significant information for family and prenatal counseling. We suggest that future studies should include for a more accurate account for both familial and environmental confounding factors to uncover relatives and environmental exposures that more limited family histories may have missed.

Bone mineral density is increased in the cadmium-induced omphalocele chick model by using three-dimensional micro-computed tomography
ConclusionsIncreased BMD may be associated with lordosis of the vertebral column in the Cd-induced omphalocele chick model, stimulating osteogenesis by activating the canonical Wnt signalling pathway.

High prevalence of gastroschisis in Brazilian triple side border: A socioenvironmental spatial analysis
by Suzana de Souza, Oscar Kenji Nihei, Cezar Rangel Pestana This research investigated the spatial association between socioenvironmental factors and gastroschisis in Brazilian triple side border. A geographic analysis for gastroschisis prevalence was performed considering census sector units using Global Moran Index, Local Indicator of Spatial Association Analysis and Getis Ord statistics. Sociodemographic factors included rate of adolescent and parturients over 35 years; population with no income and above 5 minimum wages; rate of late prenatal; and proximity to power transmission lines. Logistic regression models were ...

Assessment of the neonatal referral and transport system for patients with gastroschisis in Kenya
ConclusionThis study demonstrates that pre-transit and transit care of neonates with gastroschisis is inadequate in Kenya. Interventions needed, as identified by this study, to promote care of neonates with gastroschisis are advised.

Early pregnancy agricultural pesticide exposures and risk of gastroschisis among offspring in the San Joaquin Valley of California
Conclusion: Our study rigorously adds to the scant literature on this topic. Our a priori expectation was that we would observe certain pesticide compounds to be particularly associated with young age owing to the disproportionate risk observed for young women to have offspring with gastroschisis. We did not observe an exposure profile unique to young women. Birth Defects Research (Part A), 2014. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Epigastric heteropagus associated with an omphalocele and double outlet right ventricle
We report a case of epigastric heteropagus associated with an omphalocele and double outlet right ventricle. The cystic region of the epigastrium was detected in our patient by an ultrasound scan at 28 weeks' gestation. He was born at 37 weeks' gestation by scheduled caesarean section. A parasite with an incomplete head and lower limb was attached to the epigastrium of the autosite. Surgical separation of the parasite and silo placement for an omphalocele was successfully performed on the 4th day of life. He underwent secondary surgical closure of the omphalocele on the 10th day. For treatment of the cardiac anomaly, he un...

Is fetal magnetic resonance imaging volumetry of eventrated organs in gastroschisis predictive for surgical treatment?
ConclusionFetal MRI predicted silo bag treatment in patients with gastroschisis in 90% of the cases in our cohort and might facilitate prenatal counseling and treatment planning.

Ductus venosus reversed flow in omphalocele: Could it be a prognostic factor for long-term neurological impairment?
In conclusion, the main issue, in this case, was if the fetal omphalocele and ductus venosus reversed flow indicated fetal hypoxia, what was the obstruction effect on the oxygenated blood pathway caused by the abdominal defect, and which were the long-term effects on infants with this complex pathology with an unknown outcome.PMID:35027978 | PMC:PMC8742901 | DOI:10.25122/jml-2021-0344
